Back to Classics: Teaching Limits Through Infinitesimals

چکیده

The usual E, δ-definition of the limit of a function (whether pre sented at a rigorous or an intuitive level) requires a “candidate L” for the limit value. Thus, we have to start our first calculus course with “guessing” instead of “calculating”. In this paper we criticize the method of using calculators for the purpose of selecting candidates for L. We suggest an alternative: a working formula for calculating the limit value L of a real function in terms of infinitesimals. Our for mula, if considered as a definition of limit, is equivalent to the usual E, δ-definition but does not involve a candidate L for the limit value. As a result, the Calculus becomes to “calculate” again as it was orig inally designed to do.

Teaching Calculus with Infinitesimals

Synopsis This article argues that first semester calculus courses for non-mathematics majors should be taught using infinitesimals. This applies to both high school and undergraduate calculus courses. The use of infinitesimals in calculus, though more intuitive than the approach developed in the 19 th century, has been controversial for over two millennia. However, in the 20 th century their us...

The Ghosts of Departed Quantities

Nonstandard analysis is the branch of mathematics concerned with constructing a number system that includes infinitesimals. These are numbers smaller than any real number yet still greater than zero. Although nonstandard analysis was developed in 1966 by Abraham Robinson, it is based off of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s construction of the calculus, created some 300 years earlier. Nonstandard ana...

Smooth Evolution: An Examination of Dynamics in Smooth Worlds

Throughout the history of physics a key tool in the development of physical laws has been the infinitesimal. Infinitesimals entered the scene with the development of the calculus by Newton and Leibniz and went on to be used, to mention some of the most notable cases, in Euler’s derivation of the laws of hydrodynamics, in the development of analytical mechanics by Euler, Lagrange and Hamilton an...

Texts and Politics: Postcolonial Revaluations of two British Classics

The major argument of this essay is that Kipling treats the colonial subject as the "other," and Forster proves to be almost as pro-Empire as writers like Kipling. Nevertheless, A Passage to India is eloquent in rejecting British values and introducing Indian voices. This novel records a shift in attitude in terms of exposing the bitter realities about and attitudes of British imperialists. Des...

Archimedes’ Point: An Educational Research Body As Interface Of Engagement

The field of Classics is an inherently interdisciplinary one, combining within itself the disciplines of linguistics, history, literature, archaeology, and philosophy. In addition, Classics provision in the UK secondary school system is extremely uneven; while some students will have had eight or more years of instruction in the field prior to attending university, others might have none at all...
